Choosing A VoIP Service Provider

Check that your service offers a local numberChoosing a VoIP provider is really no different to choosing any other service provider - whether for the phone, gas or electricity.

Quality of service, reliability, features, flexibility, technical requirements and, of course, price are the important considerations. Find out who offers what you require, ensure you have the technology to use their services and compare what you get for your money.

It's also worth researching service and support either directly or by searching the Internet. You're likely to be installing VoIP yourself, so it's reassuring to know help is available if required.

Many VoIP service providers offer a call bundle allowing you to make, for example, unlimited calls to UK and Ireland landlines for a fixed monthly fee. And, if you make a lot of international calls or calls to mobiles, find out the cost of these too.

Also bear in mind that if you are giving up your traditional phone service, you will probably want a number for the same region for example 020 for London or 0113 for Leeds. Make sure the VoIP service provider you choose can provide this.

You might also find the ability to add an extra line, or a "virtual" number in another city, a useful feature. If so, check that your provider offers this.

There are plenty of VoIP services out there, so it is likely that at least one will fit your needs.
